Promoting Tallis

A professional photographer will be set a brief that they will have to complete in order to receive their wage. As a part of the photography unit, I will be taking on the role of a professional photographer. I will be set a brief that I will have to complete up the high standards of a professional photographer.

After reading the brief, I thought about what my favorite subject was and quickly came to the conclusion that it was Product Design. Product Design is a good place for a photographer as there is a lot of action on the making side (Practical work). This then led me to thinking about some of the techniques and types of photographs I would be taking.

Types of Photographs

These are some of ideas of what type of style and technique I could take my photograph using:

  • Over shoulder of a pupil on the machine (ideally sanding machine to capture the most movement)
  • Wide shoot (like a panorama) to capture the whole class room and all the pupils working in one photograph.
  • Low angle so the pupil and their work is at the top end of the photograph (looks different and gives a new perspective)
  • Close up of the pupil working on their product

Plan for the day:(29-11-13)

08:50 - 09:10
  • Get equipment ready
  • Check all equipment to make sure everything is working
  • Make sure camera is charged

09:15 - 10:45
  • Take pictures
  • Keep checking the pictures

11:15 - 13:10
  • Check photographs and see how many more photographs are needed
  • Take final set of photographs
  • Upload all of them in 2 places

14:00 - 15:10
  • Start editing the photographs

Release form

This is the release form that my client and I had to sign to agree to the contract. This contract also contains the specific requirements that my client requested which I would have to stick to through out the project in order to complete the project. My client also gave me two types of styles of photographs that I should produce.

The original copy of this form was given to my client so we both have a copy of the form.

All photographs

These are all the photographs that I took during the project. These include the photographs that didn't work for various reasons and the test pictures I took to find the best angles and settings for the best picture. I had to take a lot of photographs because the more I took, the more photographs I will be able to pick from to get the best photographs which I can then edit. Most of the photographs were taken during over one day because I was off timetable for the whole day so I was able to take enough photographs to be able to complete the project.

Editing

These screenshots are taken of the before and after photos once I had edited them. I used Adobe Lightroom. instead of Adobe Photoshop which everyone uses. The reason being that the software on Lightroom allowed me to use correct the colours individually. This software was more advanced than Photoshop which gave me better end results.

I edited each picture individual looking at what needs to be improved. For most of the final image, It was just the colours, I used Adobe Lightroom to brighten up the images without lowering the quality,  tweaked the amount of each colour, changed the contrast, increased or decreased the saturation and increased the quality on some to make the pixels more 'edgy' and lowered the quality slightly on some of the image to smooth the edges of the pixels. The result of all this editing gave more vibrant colours, brighter images and better finishes.

I then moved onto adding the effects requested on the specifications. For this, I used Adobe Lightroom to change the colours into black and white. Lightroom allowed me to change the amount of white and black in the picture. This gave me better results as there are no sections of the image which are completely black and no sections which are completely white that nothing can be seen. Another effect I added was a Vignette. This was achieved by reducing the brightness and saturation of the image around the edges. The effect of a Vignette is so the viewers focus is on the centre of the image.

Final Photographs

These are the final images which have been edited. Out of all the photographs I took for the project, I picked out the photographs that I felt had the best quality, exposure, angle, contrast and brightness. I then looked closely at the photograph to find anything that I was able to improve using editing software.

Equipment List

For a real photographer, there's a chance that the equipment may get stolen or fail. This would mean the pieces of equipment that does not function properly or has been stolen will need to be replaced as soon as possible. The reason is because if this problem occurred during a project, you would need to finish the project within the time given on the contract so you will have to be ready for the worst-case scenario. For this reason, I have come up with a list of prices for the main pieces equipment that would need to be replaced.
    Equipment:

  • Canon 5D MkIII with 24-105mm lens

Proposal

After I had finished my research and planning stages of the project, I decided to make a project proposal . You can download the original file below.

Unit 9:  Photography Techniques Evaluation

To write up my evaluation, I decided to use Google Docs. This is because Google Docs has many advantages to the conventional Microsoft Office Word. The first advantage is all changes made to a file is saved constantly. This means that the work is backed-up all the time so even if the battery dies and you didn't have a chance to save your work, Google Docs would have automatically saved it for you (If the internet is working properly).

Another advantage is Google saves all the work done on Google Docs on the 'cloud'. This means any file on Google Docs can be opened up anywhere as long as there is an internet connection (including Mobile Phones).

The third advantage is any file can be shared with anyone that has a Google account. This allows anyone to help you with the work or check your work to make sure everything is correct. They can also give feedback on the file it self so you know where to change/add information too.

This is the presentation of the 'Promoting Tallis' project. I had to present this to my class to show what I did during this project.
